2018 – Day 12

The weather finally cleared up!

Our flight was planned for the early afternoon, so we had time to visit a bit of Skaftafell park. Here lies Svartifoss, which seems to have inspired the architect of Hallgrimskirkja.

From the entrance of the park it takes about 30 minutes to reach the waterfall. The path is sorrounded by small trees and bushes and brings you to other beautiful falls.

After a quick lunch, we got to the Skaftafell airstrip. The plane was late, so we enjoyed the panorama for 30 more minutes.

The skilled pilot flew us over Vatnajokull to Grimsvotn (it seems that in recent years the ice floor is collapsing and there is unknown activity underneath). After Grimsvotn we headed west to Laki craters and Landmannalaugar. The snow was still melting (sadly it blocked us in the following days) and gave us fantastic views.

After the 90 minutes flight we immediately drove sout west: we had to take the last ferry to Westman islands. Along the way to Landeyjahofn we still had time to stop at Skogafoss and Seljalandfoss. Amazing waterfalls that sadly are overcrowded.
